A year after a foot injury that ended his 2022 season and a hand injury that sidelined him at Roland Garros 2023, Monfils is back in action. The Frenchman appeared at the tournament in Toronto and became the author of the biggest sensation of the event so far. Monfils beat Stefanos Tsitsipas.

This is his first win over a top five player in around 18 months. Gael Monfils defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in a tournament in Toronto.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the fourth racket in the world and the recent winner of the Los Cabos tournament. Going out for the match against Gael Monfils, returning to the game after injury, he was a surefire favourite. However, it was the Frenchman who took the initiative and defeated the Greek in two sets with a score of 6:4, 6:3. The win puts Monfils into the third round of the Masters 1000 for the first time in exactly 12 months.

“I was very pleased with the way I was moving around the court again. For me, great movement is always the key. I was happy with that,” said Monfils after the match. He dedicated the victory to his daughter.
