Last summer, a Saudi Arabian club paid nearly £50 million to sign Darwin Núñez. Just one year later, the Uruguayan striker has been offered back to Liverpool – this time as a free agent. Is this an opportunity too good for Andoni Iraola and the Liverpool squad to pass up?

Núñez has reportedly agreed to terminate his contract with the Saudi Pro League club. He joined them last summer, but his stay in the Middle East was cut short when the arrival of Karim Benzema changed everything. Due to foreign player restrictions for domestic league matches, Núñez was forced to make way for Benzema in the squad.

According to sources from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are among the clubs that have been offered the chance to sign the 26-year-old. A return to Anfield would mark a stunning turnaround, with the Reds potentially bringing back a former player without paying a single penny in transfer fees.

Although Núñez’s departure from Liverpool felt like the right decision at the time, the season without him has made supporters realize what they lost when he was sold. While his finishing could sometimes let him down, Núñez was an incredibly hard-working and rapid striker – and his loyalty to the shirt was never in doubt.
