The Manchester United leadership is reportedly split between Sander Berge and Tyler Adams – two realistic and affordable midfield options.
At the start of the summer, United supporters dreamed of big, high-profile names as the club planned its midfield overhaul. But INEOS has chosen a different path – cost-effective solutions without bidding wars. As a result, top targets Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes ended up joining Manchester City and Tottenham for £116 million and £85 million respectively.

After missing out on their primary targets, United signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million – before putting the brakes on their midfield rebuild.
The club has since been linked with profiles like Aurélien Tchouaméni and Manu Koné, but without any noticeable progress. According to Laurie Whitwell, United have now given up on Tchouaméni – and Alex Scott is also too expensive for the club’s midfield budget.
Internal dilemma: Berge or Adams?
In his latest appearance on the Stretford Paddock podcast, trusted United insider Laurie Whitwell reveals that INEOS are now looking at more affordable alternatives – such as Fulham’s Sander Berge and Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams.
“They’ve obviously looked at Sander Berge, who is a different type of profile. And there are others, like Tyler Adams at Bournemouth. They’ve looked at these players, and I think they’re currently assessing where to go with it. They’re trying to have this internal debate,” says The Athletic journalist.
It’s hardly the debate United supporters were hoping for at this stage of the summer. Many feel that neither Berge nor Adams would be an inspiring signing.
But if the choice is between the two, we must first look at their attributes – and which profile best complements Michael Carrick’s other midfield options: Santos, Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo.
Sander Berge – the modern box-to-box player
Berge is a 28-year-old Norwegian international who has been a key player for Fulham since his move in 2024. Standing at 195 centimeters, he is an imposing presence in midfield, but he is also capable of driving the ball forward – making him a solid box-to-box midfielder.

Tyler Adams – the defensive anchor
Adams operates in a slightly deeper role. The USMNT stalwart’s most important attribute is his ability to shield the backline – a traditional defensive midfielder who breaks up opposition attacks.
Who should United choose?
Carrick must decide whether he wants an additional number 8 (box-to-box) or a number 6 (defensive anchor) in the squad.
One could argue that the current midfield lacks a genuine box-to-box player. Santos and Tielemans are both comfortable in deeper roles – albeit with different attributes – while Mainoo is more of a playmaker than a high-energy number 8. Therefore, Berge might be the more useful profile.
The choice is not straightforward. But one thing is certain: United’s internal debate over the midfield is far from over.
