The dream is over. Incredibly young Ajax team has gone very far in the tournament and was just seconds away from the Champions League final. The lack of experience caused a terrible result though. Holland team was too sure of advancing further, because they had an advantage of three goals in the second half, that they didn’t expect such turn of events.
Barcelona also lost their advantage gained in the first game, but the experienced team like Catalans have no right to act like teenagers. It’s harder for their fans to forgive, as the expectations are much higher every season.
For Ajax it’s still a remarkable campaign. They already won KNVB Beker, and are just two games away from winning the Eredivisie title, although their main rivals, PSV, have the same number of points, but worse goal difference. It’s pretty much, what is expected from the team every season, but their Champions League performance is legendary.
First of all, they advanced to the play-offs, despite being in the tough group with Bayern, Benfica and AEK. Then the team outplayed Real Madrid, the current champions and Juventus, winning both times in the away games.
Ajax won again on rival’s stadium in the semifinals. At Johan Cruyff Arena they were leading 2:0, but Lucas Moura played the best match in his career during second half. Brazilian scored a hattrick, sending through Tottenham in the injury-time. He left the whole stadium in tears of sadness, and of joy as well.
This season probably won’t happen again any time soon, as the key players will leave the club, but it’s still a prove, that Ajax is going in the best direction possible. They already achieved more than they were expected to and can be proud of their performances.
